Union says Serbian Journalists in dire economic situation
Serbian Journalists’ Union (SINOS) leader Dragan Cabarkapa warned on Wednesday that journalists in Serbia are faced with an extremelly difficult economic position.
She told N1 that a large number of journalists in Serbia do not have contracts, have low salaries and no security and can be fired immediatelly if the employer does not like something.
“The important thing is who the director, editor and media owners are and what is expected of you. We know what professional >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << journalism is but we often faced with the expectations of employers and that is self-censorship. A journalist knows what they can’t do and if they do just that they get fired,” Cabarkapa said.
SINOS issued a proclamation for May 3, Media Freedom Day, calling the government to start a social dialogue and draft a collective branch contract for journalist and media staff by the end of the year, adding that she feels that some members of the Media Coalition (a group of media organizations) do not want a collective branch contract because they can’t meet the standards that contract would bring.
According to her, media organizations see the media as their prey. “They inflicted huge damage by insisting that the government should not have ownership of the media because they thought the number of media would drop,” Cabarkapa said adding that SINOS had been warning all along that project financing would legalize corruption.
Cabarkapa said she wants the government to form an employers’ organization and start talks between unions and media owners in September.
She warned that media organizations are fighting for places in commissions and working groups instead of fighting for the rights of journalists. “There is no solidarity and everyone is looking out for their own interests. There is no free journalism in conditions of fear, corruption and poverty. Every government wants to control the media and whether they succeed depends on us. It has succeeded here,” Cabarkapa said.
