UNHCR Serbia: Migrant crisis not over
The UNHCR chief in Serbia warned on Wednesday that the migrant crisis is not over and that international cooperation has to continue.
“The causes of the crisis are still in place and we have to continue cooperating and creating a political climate which is conducive to people not coming to Europe. We also need to make Europe capable of sustaining the flow of migrants,” UNHCR official Hans Schodder said at a presentation of Germany’s efforts to help Serbia with the refugee >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << crisis.
German agencies helped Serbia take care of some 50,000 migrants and have built temporary housing for 500 people in Subotica and Dimitrovgrad. German embassy official Catrin Meike Czyganowski said Serbia was faced with a huge challenge in 2015 and Germany came to her aid with food, housing and medical aid while Serbian Refugee Commissariat spokesman Ivan Gerginov recalled that the 2015 budget had to be increased by 600 percent to deal with the crisis.
European Union delegation official Nicolas Bizel said that the key issue was coordinating cooperation between the Serbian government and donors and added that the next problem is resolving the long-term status of migrants. “Europe is faced with three things: continued humanitarian aid to migrants, a long-term plan to integrate migrants and improve security and fight illegal entry,” he said. Serbia currently has an estimated 4,000 refugees, 3,800 of them in asylum centers.
