UN war crimes judge criticises Serbian PM’s statement

Outgoing UN war crimes tribunal chief Judge Theodor Meron expressed disappointment over Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabic’s denial that genocide had been committed in Srebrenica.

“I expressed disagreement and disappointment with the recent interview (to Radio Deutsche Welle) given by the Prime Minister in which she denied that the crimes committed in Srebrenica constituted genocide,” Meron, who headed the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals (IRMCT) told >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << N1 after his meeting with Brnabic at the end of his two day visit to Serbia.

The press release quotes Meron as saying that several judgements before the Hague Tribunal (ICTY) made it absolutely clear that genocide had been committed in Srebrenica in 1995.“It does not help the Government of Serbia to challenge judgements of a major international criminal tribunal,” he added.

Meron and Brnabic are reported to have discussed continued cooperation in ensuring accountability for war crimes at national level.

In a separate press release from the Serbian government, Brnabic is said to have appealed to Meron for better treatment of Serbian nationals serving sentences for war crimes and to transfer some of them to Serbian jails.

That press release quoted Meron as saying cooperation between the IRMCT and Serbian government is very good and expressing concern over the inadequate prison conditions some inmates are faced with.
