Two-day holiday for May 1 in Serbia
May first is a traditional outdoor two-day holiday in Serbia which is celebrated on day-long outings with barbecues on picnic grounds.
Most cities and towns in Serbia have picnic grounds that are traditional gathering places on the day known as international labour day.
The two-day holiday was celebrated by workers in Serbia in the early 20th century and the tradition remained in place in Yugoslavia both before and after World War 2.
It evolved from an organized >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << event with parades and speeches by union officials to today’s outing which starts early in the morning and is known as Prvomajski Uranak.
Warnings about cooking on open fires are issued every year to prevent forest fires.
Most shops and businesses are closed but some retail outlets remain open for at least part of the day on May 1 and go back to normal working hours the next day even though it is a holiday in Serbia.
May 1 also continues to be celebrated in the former Yugoslav republics.
