Third century mausoleum found in Serbia

A third century mausoleum has been discovered by Serbian archaeologists at the Viminacium site in eastern Serbia.

The mausoleum was found by a team from the Archaeological Institute in Belgrade north of the mausoleum of the Roman Emperor Hostilian.

The Viminacium archeological site is located on the Danube river east of Belgrade near the town of Kostolac.

Archeologists found the stone head of a Roman emperor at the site. “The head of a young man was found, >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << as well as a very carefully carved hand holding a sword and parts of a Roman sword. We also found fragments of an eagle wing which is a symbol of the god Jupiter and the Roman Empire,” a member of the team, headed by Institute chief Miomir Korac, said.

The archaeologists said the newly found mausoleum was destroyed in a process called "damnatio memoriae" to make sure there was no memory of the person buried in it, adding that this is done only to emperors. They believe that a huge effort was invested to destroy the mausoleum. The stone in the structure was also removed at a later date and used in construction.

Archaeologists have located more than 80 grave sites dating from the second and third centuries AD at the Viminacium site.
