TV station Director: Fake news is worse than terrorist bombs
Misinformation and false news are much worse than bombs used by terrorists because they can destroy the society with more devastating consequences, Director of the Brod B92 news station Veran Matic told FoNet, adding that the fight against false news should not be managed by the state alone.
"Just as the safety of the press is important, it is equally important to establish a monitoring of a sort for the prevention of false news," Matic stressed.
The goal of this prevention >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << would be not to allow the bearers of false news to become dominant in our public space, if it is not already too late for that. Matic also warned that competent institutions or agencies should start working on this, as soon as possible.
"In any case, this shouldn’t be managed by the state alone because the state doesn’t know how to deal with this," Matic added.
In his opinion, the false or “fake” news is a new-age phenomenon in its technological sense. He said he sees it as putting media, social groups and the attention and interests of the public in the function of politics.
Even though the term “fake news” was coined only recently, Matic recalled that false news has always existed but their effects and reach were very limited. Today, they have unlimited possibilities.
He also pointed out that the public has lost the awareness and the ability to differentiate between the real and false news. Matic also recalled that false news was used at the end of the last century to promote hatred and false patriotism in the Balkans.
"In this way, our entire life has become 'fake'," Matic concluded.
