Serbia’s town covered with ashes

The residents and their homes in Kostolac, Serbia’s small town on the river Danube, are completely covered with ashes coming from a pit of one of the largest thermal power plants in Serbia.

The fragments are not only in the air, but they settle on trees’ branches and enter the homes.

Residents are struggling to get rid of them in all possible ways but seem to be losing the battle.

The pit was declared the most modern in Serbia in 2012, but clean air has >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << not been available to people for years. The particles, carried by a wind, destroy both agricultural crops and human health.

The eye drops are a must in every home since conjunctivitis is common problem in the town.

The owner and the operator of the power plant, state company Elektroprivreda Srbija, says the weather is a problem, and adds they will cover the terminal with 15 centimeters of soil, but the residents believe that will be only a temporary solution.

They say the Ministry of Environment’s penalties for the company produced no results.
