Serbia's police: Officers leaving, chiefs ready to resign
Serbia’s Police Union warned on Tuesday the situation in the Interior Ministry (MUP) “has been deteriorating, that officers are leaving and that several police chiefs announce resignations due to the prevention of organised crime investigations,” the Beta news agency.
The Union representatives also said another reason behind the moves were “bad interpersonal relations.”
“Police officers cannot watch the crimes being committed while they are not allowed to >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << react. The discontent is huge and widespread from ordinary policemen to police chiefs,” a Union statement said.
It added that “the decisions are taken by a small group of powerful people who are officially not entitled to deal with organised crime probes.”
“But, they decide who will be arrested, who won’t be. Because of that situation, mobbing and bad material and working conditions, officers leave the force en masse,” said the statement signed by the Union president Veljko Mijailovic.
He added that in the last several years, between eight and 12 percent of the policemen left the job to work as drivers or handymen in the European Union countries.
“If this trend of the best among us leaving continues, police will not be able to protect Serbia’s people adequately. Therefore, we appeal for an improvement of the MUP situation so that we can preserve one of the most important state’s institution,” Mijailovic said in the statement.
