Serbia’s official: Govt to better protect human rights
Suzana Paunovic, the Director of the Office for human and minority rights, said on Monday the government’s priorities included the women’s rights, improvement of the position of persons with disability and older citizens, as well as the protection of children and their rights.
She added that the Action Plan for the Chapter 23 in the accession talks with the European Union about the judiciary and basic rights was almost done.
“We are working on a better protection >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << of human rights,” Paunovic told Serbia’s state RTS television, adding that “some activities are yet to be harmonised with the EU criteria."
The EU criteria know as “Copenhagen criteria” stipulate “stable institutions guaranteeing democracy, the rule of law, human rights and respect for and protection of minorities” which a candidate country has to meet to join the bloc.
The European Commission's latest report said Serbia made some progress in the accession talks with the EU but failed to improve in rule of law and in normalising the relations with Kosovo.
Sem Fabrizi, the head of the EU Delegation to Serbia said in April that the EC report confirmed Serbia’s Government dedication to the country’s European path.
He added that good progress was made in the economic reforms, but that the issue of political influence over judiciary had not been solved yet.
