Serbia’s journalists don’t see bright future

Journalists in Serbia are endangered, in a bad economic situation, incline to self-censorship, exposed to all kinds of pressure and often targeted, media representatives said on Thursday, marking the World Press Freedom Day.

They said that media were under a sophisticated types of pressure.

“The majority of media are facing enormous economic problems… All media that dare doing their job differently (than pro-government ones), or mention (Serbia’s President Aleksandar) >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << Vucic in a negative context are in danger of ceasing to exist,” Safeta Bisevac, a journalist, said.

Her colleague Slobodan Stupar said that all regimes tried to control media but in different ways.

He added that no one could do that without a help from journalists themselves, saying that some were corruptible and did not understand journalism.

“Morality is a big problem for people who care about serious journalism. If you are an honest person, if you want to tell a pure story till its end, then you have to take some risks. But today there are just a few people in journalism ready to take such risk,” Stupar said, echoing general feeling among Serbia’s journalists about uncertain and not bright future of their profession.

The not less pessimistic tone was heard from the European Commission’s and Reporters Without Borders’ reports warning about the deteriorating media situation in Serbia and calling on the journalists to resist the destruction of profession.
