Serbia’s Kanal 9 TV to go back air after meeting with minist
A Novi Sad TV station and the Serbian Ministry of Culture and Information reached an agreement on Monday to solve the station’s debt problems and bring it back on the air.
An agreement was reacehd and Kanal 9 will most probably resume broadcasts on Monday evening, station CEO Maja Pavlovic told the Beta news agency after a meeting with Minister Vladan Vukosavljevic.
Pavlovic started her hunger strike on May 18 after the country’s top broadcasting regulatory body the >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << ETV shut down Kanal 9’s signal claiming the station owed 2.5 million Dinars in frequency fees. The problem started because the station’s local frequency was replaced by the ETV with a regional frequency which draws higher fees.
Pavlovic said she would end the hunger strike when the Ministries of Culture and Information, and Trade, Tourism and Telecommunications schedule a meeting which will be attended by the ETV, Regulatory Body for Electronic Media (REM), journalists’ and media organizations and the OSCE.
She said an agreement had been signed with ETV acting CEO Branko Gogic on a grace period for the Kanal 9 debt. The Ministry of Culture and Information said in a press release that an agreement had been reached to re-programme the Kanal 9 debt and added that the ministry expressed readines to help organize the meeting that Pavlovic is insisting on to “resolve the situation in the most painless manner”.
