Serbian teachers demand equal pay

A Serbian teachers’ union staged a protest in front of the Serbian government headquarters on Wednesday, demanding equal pay grades for all state employees and higher salaries.

Union leader Jasna Jankovic said she had learned that teachers’ salaries would be lowered as of January 2019 under the new pay grades that the government is planning to introduce. She said the pay grade system the government is drawing up is discriminatory towards teachers, health care and social services >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << staff.

According to the Union, the government is planning to introduce a system of 12 pay grades with teachers classed as Grade 8.

Prime Minister Ana Brnabic said later that the education system will continue to be her government’s priority. “We have said for years that education is an absolute priority and it is clear from what we have done that education is a priority,” she told reporters.

Brnabic said that teachers have received pay rise of 20 percent since 2014 which is more than any other state sector. “We will continue down that path but it would not be good to speak of percentages at present,” she said adding that the government will continue its reform of the salary system.
