Serbian president at MiG-29 handover
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic visited the Batajnica airbase outside Belgrade on Tuesday to attend the handover of the first two of six MiG-29 fighter aircraft procured from Russia, the Beta news agency reported.
The two aircraft underwent maintenance work before being deployed to a Serbian air force fighter unit. The first of the two aircraft was tested following maintenance and upgrades late in July.
Vucic was at the airbase with Defence Minister Aleksandar Vulin >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << and Army of Serbia chief of staff General Ljubisa Dikovic.
The six MiG-29s were a gift from Russia under a cooperation deal which called for Serbia to pay for their maintenance and upgrades. At least four more of the same type of aircraft are due to come to Serbia under a deal with Belarus. Military analysts believe that the arrival of these aircraft are just a temporary solution for the Serbian military because they are all aged and in need of major maintenance work.
According to media reports, the maintenance and upgrade work on the Russian MiG-29s cost more than 200 million Euros.
