Serbian organizations say media situation catastrophic

Serbian media organizations are staging their traditional Five Minutes of Thundering Silence event on May 3 to draw attention to what they said is the catastrophic position facing the media.

The Independent Journalists Association of Serbia (NUNS) and Nezavisnost branch union called all journalists and media to observe silence and broadcast no images from 11:55 to 12:00 on Thursday as a warning to the authorities about the catastrophic position of journalists, the media and media >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << staff.

The Journalists Association of Serbia (UNS) called the media to air its proclamation at the same time or put it on their screens.   The UNS said the year 2017 would be remembered for incidents, assaults and threats against journalists and the blocked bank accounts of media as well as what it called drastic abuses of the project co-financing system.

For its part, the Ministry of Culture and Information drew attention to the importance of media freedom and the role of the media in strengthening democacy. “This day is provides opportunity to confirm the strong commitment of the Republic of Serbia to promote the development of a positive media environment and encourage development initiatives for all the interested parties in the media field with a view to promoting freedom of expression and thought,” ministry press release said.
