Serbian journalist assaulted, attacker arrested
The Serbian police have arrested a man suspected of assaulting journalist Stefan Cvetkovic, less than a month after he went missing for two days in June.
Journalist Stefan Cvetkovic was physically assaulted in front of a cafe in his home town of Bela Crkva on Monday evening. The police said a 39-year-old man identified only by his initials had been arrested for the attack which left Cvetkovic with a bloodied head. Cvetkovic told Danas daily newspaper that he was hit with a metal bar by a local drug dealer who had been investigated earlier for threatening the journalist. He added that the alleged drug dealer also tried to run him over with his car.
Cvetkovic went missing in mid-June. Police found his car abandoned with the lights on in Bela Crkva and launched an investigation. The journalist appeared after two days, saying he had been kidnapped but local prosecutors filed charges against him alleging that he had staged the incident. Cvetkovic was given a police protection detail which he said was withdrawn two days before the assault on him. “I don’t believe it is a coincidence that the attack came right after that. I believe the attacker wanted to kill me and I will hold a news conference at the cafe where the attack happened,” he said.
