Serbian government, unions differ on minimum wage

The Serbian Socio-Economic Council has failed to reach agreement on the minimum wage for next year with the government and employers deciding to set it at 155 Dinars which union representatives said was lower than what they wanted.

Speaking after a session of the Council, Labour Minister Zoran Djordjevic told a media conference that the government decided to raise the minimum wage by 8.6 percent. Union representatives insisted on a 10 percent raise before the session.

The current minimum wage is 143 Dinars an hour (1 Euro – 119 Dinars) and was set by the Socio-Economic Council which brings together representatives of the government, employers and unions.

Independent Unions of Serbia leader Ljubisav Orbovic said all the unions involved in the negotiations agreed to demand a 10 percent raise in the minimum wage, adding that their managing bodies had not been convened to decide whether to accept the 8.6 percent raise or not. Union bodies will decide on the proposed raise later, he said.

The raise means that the minimum monthly wage will be 27,022 Dinars which Finance Minister Sinisa Mali said is a realistic raise “and perhaps even more than that”.

The media were told that the raise would be followed by an agreement on the minimum wage rising over the next three or four years to reach the level of the minimum consumer basket which now stands at 36,000 Dinars.
