Serbian government says poverty rates drop

The poverty rate in Serbia dropped from 8.8 percent in 2006 to 7.2 percent in 2017 according to data on absolute poverty, the Serbian government said on Thursday.

A press release said that the data shows there has been a constant drop in poverty rates since 2014 bringing the rate to the levels of 2006 and 2007.

“That trend was caused primarily by the results of the economic policies of the previous and this government, especially the fiscal consolidation measures but >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << also overall economic reforms,” it said.

“The data shows that the criticism by the Democratic Party that the state is doing nothing to reduce poverty is absolutely untrue and arbitrary,” the government press release said.

The unemployment rate in the second quarter of the year stands at 11.9 percent and is almost half of what it was in 2012 when the Democratic Party created economic policy.
