Serbian Railway Museum looses oldest locomotive
The oldest locomotive in the Serbian Railway Museum collection has been cut up and removed from the museum depot, Museum Director Nenad Vojcic confirmed for N1.
The locomotive was built in 1864 and was of the same type used in the construction of the Suez canal. It was removed in pieces on August 31 from the depot which is part of the old railway station whose main building is being turned into a museum.
Vukovic said that lathes, drills and parts of the museum’s technical collection had been destroyed and a 30 tonne lathe removed. “There had been robberies and destruction of property earlier but the final blow came last week,” he said.
