Serbian President : Belgrade-Pristina relations a problem

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said on Thursday that Belgrade-Pristina relations remain a big problem on Serbia’s road to the European Union, adding that official Belgrade is ready to discuss a compromise with the Albanians.

“Belgrade-Pristina relations remain a big problem for us Serbs not because someone has promised something but because someone has been responsible enough to think about Serbia’s future and resolve this difficult question once and for all. We will >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << be ready at any moment to talk to the Albanians about a compromise but we hope and expect that the Brussels Agreement will be implement,” Vucic told the media after a meeting with European Parliament rapporteur for Serbia David McAllister.

He said the Albanians “have the courage and temerity as well as someone’s support in not meeting their obligations”. “We have fulfilled all our obligations and they are unequivocally lying and deceiving the public saying that the non-existant energy agreement has not been implemented. We are certainly not looking for a reason for a strategic break in any kind of talks,” Vucic said.

According to Vucic, 80 percent of the population advocate a frozen conflict which is not a good solution. “I will not take a decision against our people, I want to convince them that peace is much more important for us,” the president said.

The Serbian President feels that a lot remains to be done in terms of rule of law but he expressed the conviction that the dissatisfaction of part of the public with media freedom and freedom of expression has changed.

Vucic said the EU member states should decide how many chapters they want Serbia to open. “That is up to you. You want us to become an EU member and we look forward to that but when you want that is up to you. Our job is to meet our obligations, for the citizens to be free and live in a democratic country with better living standards,” the Serbian president said.

McAllister said 2018 is a key year for the Western Balkans because the EU is focused on the region once more adding that he believes that Serbia will use the political momentum to implement reforms in rule of law, the judiciary and human rights.

The German parliamentarian said lasting stability requires a focus on cooperation and the normalization of relations in the region. “Serbia is progressing and its European goals are being achieved,” McAllister said. “The opening of chapters and their number is not decided by the European Parliament but I hope that Serbia will be rewarded for its constant progress,” he said.

“I believe in Serbia and the ability of President Vucic,” he said. McAllister’s report on Serbia will be debated by the European Parliament on September 3.
