Serbian Kids’ rights organization condemns discrimination

A Serbian childrens’ rights organization condemned discrimination against Roma children in the southern Serbian town of Bujanovac, where some parents are keeping their children from school in protest over mixed classes.

The Network of Serbian Childrens’ Organizations said the parents were dissatisfied with the fact that Roma children were put into the same classes as non-Roma children.

“Roma children are often subjected to indirect or direct discrimination and the >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << forming of segregated classes or scholls is certainly a form of discrimination banned under anti-discrimination regulations and the law on the education system,” the Network said in a press release.

The Network said some 25 first grade children in Bujanovac had not started the school year because their parents do not want them to be in mixed classes with Roma children and are demanding that their children are placed classes identical to their pre-school groups.

Bujanovac is a town and municipality of about 55,000 people in southern Serbia whose population is about half Albanian and half Serb with some 5 percent of Roma according to the 2011 census. Bujanovac is also one of three southern Serbian municipalities that have been mentioned in the context of a possible exchange of territory between Serbia and Kosovo.
