Serbian Defence Ministry drafting study on conscription
Serbia’s Defence Ministry is looking into a possible reinstatement of mandatory military service for young men, N1 was told on Wednesday.
“The Defence Ministry, acting under orders from the President of Serbia and supreme commander of the Army of Serbia (VS), has started drafting a study on all modes and possibilities of reinstating mandatory military service,” the ministry said in a written reply.
It recalled that military service was never abolished but was discontinued >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << by parliament in January 2011. “Military service has been voluntary since then but the obligation of being entered into military records and service in the reserve has remained in place. The ministry is analyzeing the effects of the current solution in terms of professional service and is looking for an optimal solution based on a detailed analysis of security challenges, risks and threats with insight into our own experience and that of foreign militaries,” the ministry said.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said on Tuesday that a possible reinstating of mandatory military service is being considered.
