Serb opposition to counter nationalist rally
Serbia’s Democratic Party and the League of Vojvodina’s Social-democrats said on Thursday they would organise a gathering to counter a Serb nationalist and convicted war criminal’s rally in the northern village of Hrtkovci on May 6.
Vojislav Seselj, the leader of the Serbian Radical party, convicted of war crimes against the Croats from Hrtkovci in 1992 and sentenced to 10 years in jail which he spent in The Hague Tribunal custody, said he would mark the anniversary of his >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << speech in the village that resulted in mass expulsion of local Croats.
“Seselj in Hrtkovci send a clear message that the Croats have nothing to look forward to in Serbia,” Nenad Canak of the League told N1 360 Degrees TV programme.
The gathering will be held under the “We don’t want to separate, we don’t want to move” slogan, he added.
Aleksandra Jerkov, a Democratic Party’s (DS) MP said DS would join the counter rally.
Both Canak and Jerkov said they were recently verbally attacked by Seselj and his party’s MPs for calling him a war criminal and demanding that his MP’s status be annulled, as stipulated by the respective law.
