Russians digitalise Serbia’s Middle Age books
Secretary-general of the Russian National Library brought to Belgrade a collection of Serbia’s Middle Age book and manuscripts that have been digitalised in Saint Petersburg.
Alexander Visly presented the President of Serbia’s Acadamy of Science and Art (SANU) Vladimir Kostic with 375 files and 342 texts from the 12th century onward.
The originals are kept in St. Petersburg.
"There are one percent manuscripts from the 12th century, 14 percent from the 13th, >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << 28 percent from the 14th, 23 from the 15th century, while more than a third of the material comes from the 16th century and later,” Kostic said.
Visly said that the St. Petersburg library’s fund was founded by traders, wealthy people and priests who travelled and were bringing books they found in monasteries or buying them from ordinary people and then the books were catalogued in the library.
He added that the whole process lasted 14 months and was “very simple because there was only one copy of each book or manuscript."
Visly said that the cooperation with SANU would continue and that the next step would be to copy those documents and thus make them available to general public. The whole project was financially helped by the Elena and Gennady Timchenko Fund.
