No Privatization of Serbian defence industry

Serbian Defence Minister Aleksandar Vulin said during Tuesday’s visit to the Sloboda munitions factory that a new law has been introduced preventing the privatization of military industry plants but allowing recapitalization.

“We have adopted a law which guarantees that the state will always own 51 percent. We adopted a law which prevents privatization but allows recapitalization. Before this law was introduced, the Sloboda Cacak plant had the same legal standing as any other >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << factory. There was no legal difference between Sloboda and a bakery and now there is. We recognize the Serbian defence industry, it is recapitalized under special rules and its privatization is not possible because that would mean that someone could buy 51 percent. Under the law, the state of Serbia has to own 51 percent,” Vulin said.

According to a Defence Ministry press release, Vulin said he would be happy to see an investor with fresh money, new technology and markets but added that the state will always have control of Sloboda and other military industry factories.

He said Sloboda would get 20 million Euro in fresh funding over the next three years. “The Serbian government is expected to invest six million Euro and the company will come up with 13-14 million more. Sloboda’s production and its exports are immensely important to us but even more important is the fact that it makes so-called smart munitions which will make our military more capable and keep it in step with the most developed militaries,” Vulin said.

The Defence Minister said the Serbian military industry’s exports were worth 570 million Dollars last year and that it expects to export goods worth 670 million Dollars this year.
