N1 Belgrade journalist awarded for fighting discrimination
Among the reporters who were this year awarded for promoting equality and fighting discrimination during the conference on the occasion of the International Tolerance Day, was N1 Belgrade TV journalist Miodrag Sovilj, N1 reported on Friday.
The reward is granted by Serbia’s Commissioner for the Protection of Equality Brankica Jankovic who has established the award supported by the OSCE Mission in Belgrade.

“Discrimination exists where there is no knowledge. People do not know enough about a certain social group and make up their mind regardless of reality. A journalist has a task to unbiasedly inform (the public) about that as well as about all other issues,” Sovilj said.
The research titled “Serbia’s media attitude toward discrimination,” presented at the conference showed the journalists thought the discrimination and hate speech were often present in the society.
“The word discrimination becomes common in Serbia, and I hear it more often every year, Jankovic told the conference.
Andrea Orizio, the head of the OSCE Mission in Belgrade said that “Serbia with its developed communities and rich culture has to promote diversity and respect the obligations undertaken at the international level, as well as local regulations.”
Jankovic said that Serbia was working on creating a tolerant society since tolerance meant that freedom of speech should not offend anyone or serve as an alibi for the hate speech, while the equality was a foundation of the rule of law and a fair society.
She added that the role of media in creating such society was important.
“Media should not allow that the freedom of speech justifies the hate speech. That’s why journalists are a window to the world, and that window could sometimes be closed instead of opened,” Jankovic told the conference.
