More than 40 die at work in Serbia
A total of 41 people have died at work in Serbia this year compared to 39 in all of 2017, Belgrade daily newspaper Danas said on Thursday.
The newspaper said that 10 people died at construction sites and nine in metal industry plants, adding that no one was held accountable for those deaths.
“Only one employer was fined last year and paid the maximum of a million Dinars but no one was held accountable for the 39 deaths in some public place,” Workplace Safety Department >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << chief Marina Furtula is quoted as saying.
Serbian Independent Unions’ Alliance (SSSS) leader Ljubisav Orbovic recalled that 440 workers lost their lives at work over the past 12 years while Labour Inspectorate chief Stevan Djurovic warned that the main problem is failure to act on charges filed by inspectors before their statute of limitations expires.
He said some 22,000 people were found working unregistered this year.
