Minister announces laws against illegal construction

The state has not expressed a strict enough stance on the issue of illegal construction, Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Zorana Mihajlovic said on Saturday, adding that this issue requires more than just the work of one ministry and appealing to citizens to refrain from buying illegally built property.

Mihajlovic said that the changes in the Law on Legalisation of Buildings and the Law on Construction Planning the Government adopted on its October 11 session >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << will offer new opportunities for a more effective fight against investors who build without permits.

The novelty of the legislation is that instead of acting on a final ruling, demolition can take place after the second instance ruling.

“So far we have seen that one of the main forms of misuse of the legalization of buildings was turning court procedures into marathon procedures as those on average last for years in Serbia. We expect this measure to produce more removals of buildings than so far,” Mihajlovic said.

She added that the changes include a ban on sales for buildings which have not been legalized.

The changes will also give municipal and city inspectors more powers but also more responsibilities and all this is supposed to lead to an end of the illegal building.
