Milosevic’s widow sentenced by Belgrade court
A Belgrade court sentenced Mirjana Markovic, widow of the late Serbian and Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic, to a year in jail for the unauthorised handing out of state-owned housing.
The Higher Court in Belgrade handed down the sentence almost 15 years after Markovic was indicted. It also sentenced two of her associates to prison sentences for the same crime.
Markovic left Serbia for Russia after the fall of the Milosevic regime and the arrest and extradition to >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << the Hague Tribunal of her husband. She has not been seen in public for years and an international warrant for her arrest was issued in 2005.
The trial was conducted in absentia. The indictment included Serbia’s current Ambassador to Cuba Danilo Pantovic who is being tried separately and former State Security Service chief Jovica Stanisic who is standing trial before a UN war crimes tribunal in the Hague. The court ruled to free Stanisic of the charges because of the war crimes trial.
