MasterCard denies excessive fees claim

MasterCard Serbia on Monday denied claims that it was profiting from inter-banking fees paid to card issuing banks.

The statement followed a statement by the Efektiva Association which protects bank customers welcoming a decision by the Serbian Committee to protect competition to launch an investigation against MasterCard for alleged violations of competition regulations.

Efektiva reported MasterCard to the Commission early in 2018, alleging that the company was setting >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << minimum inter-banking fees several times higher than in European Union member states.

“The Commission’s decision to start formal proceedings is a procedural step and has nothing to do with the legality of inter-banking fees in Serbia,” the MasterCard press release said, adding that the Efektiva claims were unfounded. It added that Efektiva had filed similar charges earlier which were thrown out by the Higher Court in Belgrade in 2017.

“MasterCard does not issue cards, does not set or collect consumer fees and does not profit from inter-banking fees which the accepting bank pays to the card issuer,” the press release said.

Some Serbian banks e-mailed their customers the statement by the Commission that said the proceedings were being launched.
