Macedonian officials arrested over Skoplje 2014 project
The Macedonian Financial Police said on Wednesday that it had filed criminal charges against a former mayor who is suspected of embezzling funds earmarked for the government’s Skoplje 2014 project.
The charges were filed against the Mayor of the Skoplje Centar municipality Vladimir Todorovic and two of his associates who are suspected of embezzling some 430,000 Euros during the construction of a bridge across the Vardar river.
As part of their plea bargain deal, the >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << three suspects repaid the money, Financial Police Director Arafat Muaremi said and added that the investigation into the entire project is being continued.
The Macedonian government earmarked some 80 million Euro for the Skoplje 2014 which ended up costing more than 700 million. The project was intended to entirely change central sections of the Macedonian capital to give it a classical look with a number of monuments. The project drew criticism from architects and the opposition which accused the government of using it to launder money.
