Lawyers: Serbia to do everything to find attorney’s killer

Serbia’s Bar Association called on the authorities on Monday to use all resources in apprehending the killers who gunned down their colleague on Saturday, N1 reported.

The Association said over the weekend its members would be on strike for a week in a protest over the murder of Dragoslav Misa Ognjanovic, which they said was the last in the series of 50 attacks on lawyers in a decade, with most of them reaming unsolved.

Ognjanovic was gunned down outside his >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << apartment. His 26-year-old son was lightly injured.

The lawyer was involved in high-profile criminal cases. he was a member of the legal team defending Luka Bojovic, a drug boss, currently in jail in Spain. He also served as a defence counsel to one of the accused in the murder of a French football team supporter in Belgrade in 2009.

In The Hague, before the War Crimes Tribunal, Ognjanovic was one of the defence advisors to Serbia’s former President Slobodan Milosevic, who died before the end of the trial.

The Association's president Viktor Gostiljac told reporters that, as always, the next several days were vital for solving any crime and that their strike was a form of pressure on the authorities to work more efficiently on finding and punishing the attackers on lawyers.

Gostiljac said that an attack on an attorney was an attack on a legal state, adding the lawyers’ protest showed they were united and not scared.

Asked if the Association would demand the Interior Minister’s resignation, Gostiljac said that would not contribute to solving the kill.

He said the Association’s representatives would meet Justice Minister Nela Kuburovic and Interior Minister Nebojsa Stefanovic to discuss the forming of an investigative body in charge of the cases of attacks on lawyers.

Gostiljac said he did not have any knowledge that Ognjanovic had received any threats and reiterated that the Association would offer an award for information leading to the arrest of those involved in the murder.

The head of the Belgrade Bar Association Jugoslav Tintor said that the “feeling of being in danger” was an individual perception, adding that lawyers were used to such a burden and did not react like other people.

His colleague Zora Dobricanin Nikodinovic called on the media “not to report on Ognjanovic’s murder in a tabloid-style and not to divert attention to his son as a witness because that makes him a target.”

She added that lately in Belgrade, compared to its size, “an abnormal number of murders, committed by gangs’ members, happened.”

Only several hours ahead of the Saturday's murder, Minister Stefanovic described the security situation in the country as better than before, adding that in the last 30 days there was not any gang-related murder.
