Jury member resigns over disagreement on monument design
Professor Miodrag Zivkovic resigned from the jury formed to chose the best among five proposed designs of a monument to Stefan Nemanja, founder of the Nemanjic dynasty and the Great Prince of Serbia who ruled during the 12th century.
Explaining the resignation, Zivkovic said that the winning design of Russian sculptor Alexander Rukavishnikov was “inappropriate” and that the decision on the winner was passed under the pressure of the jury chairman Nikola Selakovic, the Belgrade-based >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << daily “Danas” reported.
The Belgrade city authorities passed a decision on constructing the monument back in 2015 at the initiative of then Prime Minister of Serbia, today's President, Aleksandar Vucic.
The call for design ideas was issued in 2016, and it was previously decided that the monument would be installed in the Manjez Park.
Zivkovic reminded in the resignation letter which he sent to Selakovic that the jury expressed dissatisfaction with “very low artistic” level of the submitted design ideas. According to him, the jury also assessed that no single application met visual, symbolic or substantive demands.
