Journalist associations: Situation in the media dramatic

The situation in Serbia's media is dramatically bad, Serbia’s coalition of journalists and media associations warned in a letter they sent to international organisations and institutions. They added that the authorities’ goal is not to improve the situation but to present it to international actors as different from what it really is like.

"We would like to warn you in advance of the possibility that the Serbia authorities want the Media Strategy process to be presented as a >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << huge step forward with the aim of hiding all other problems on Serbia’s media scene," the letter said.

In the letter signed by the Independent Association of Serbia’s Journalists, Independent Association of Journalists of Vojvodina, Association of Independent Electronic Media, Association of Online Media and the Local Press, media representatives said that even if the Media Strategy turns out to be good, the process of amendments to the Law on Electronic Media and the creation of a new law would begin only after the Strategy’s adoption.

"We fear that a large number of professional media in Serbia will not even welcome the new laws, especially those who are exposed to strong political and economic pressures," they said, adding that it took three years to adopt new laws after the previous strategy was adopted.
