Interview Olivia Lazard: Rio Tinto’s project crystallises concerns that go beyond the project itself
Lithium is an important component for decarbonization, digitalization and defense technologies. In particular, lithium is very important for certain battery technologies, and for the future of storage in electrified systems, which are vital for the energy transition. The demand for lithium has surged in recent years. Supply is currently not at risk, but the diversification of supply is however important. China operates the lion share of lithium refining in the world, and therefore controls extensively one of the supply chains which are is key for the future of energy, economic and defense security for all countries in the world, says our interviewee, Olivia Lazard, a fellow at Carnegie Europe.
