Commemoration held for victims of Nazi death camp in Belgrade
The Israeli Ambassador in Belgrade Alona Fisher Kamm attended a commemoration for the victims of the Staro Sajmiste (Judenlager Semlin) Nazi death camp in New Belgrade on Wednesday (April 11).
The Ambassador said that common suffering and history and a desire to build a future together is the basis for the solidarity and friendship between Serbs and Jews. “This is an opportunity to thank the Serbian government, >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << the city of Belgrade and other cities and NGOs for preserving the memory of the Holocaust,” Fisher Kamm told the ceremony attended by members of the government, representatives of the Jewish Municipality in Belgrade and the Jewish organization BONDS.
City Manager Goran Vesić said work on a memorial center at the camp site would continue once the Serbian Parliament adopts a law on the center in the next few months, adding that the city authorities had declared May 10 Holocaust Remembrance Day on the anniversary of the day that the Nazis declared the Serbian capital free of Jews.
