German Ambassador’s reception for Human Rights Activist
Sonja Liht is a tireless fighter for human rights, Germany’s Ambassador to Serbia Axel Dittmann said on Thursday at a reception for the President of the Belgrade Fund for Political Excellence (BFPE) President who was given one of Germany’s top award.
Liht became the first Serbian to be awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and received the medal at a ceremony in Berlin on May 22 from German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier for efforts to protect human >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << rights, freedom and democracy.
Speaking at the reception in his residency, Ambassador Dittmann said that Liht is a tireless fighter for human rights, democratization and reconciliation in the region, adding that she always has a critical and constructive attitude and suggests solutions.
Liht said the award was positive recognition of everything she has done in the past fifty years. “I became an activist at age 11 and I don’t think I ever stopped,” she added.
Also present at the reception was Prime Minister Ana Brnabic who voiced pride that the award was given to someone from Serbia, especially someone like Liht who “contributed to the democratization of the overall political culture in Serbia”. Liht was the voice of reason in public discourse in the most turbulent of times and was always there for the authorities despite different political views, helping with advice and knowledge. Brnabic thanked Liht for helping the government over the past few years as an advisor.
