Fresh protest over name agreement in Macedonian capital
A group of some 500 people gathered in front of the Macedonian parliament to protest the agreement on a new name for the former Yugoslav republic, an N1 journalist reported from Skoplje on Monday evening.
The protesters are being kept from approaching parliament by a double line of police.
The crowd shouted slogans against Prime Minister Zoran Zaev who signed the agreement with his Greek counterpart Alexis Tsipras and voiced support for President Gjorge Ivanov who is >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << opposed to the deal. The protesters are also opposed to the holding of a referendum on the agreement.
The police deployed in front of the building as the crowd grew.
The protests have no official organizer and the crowd gathers after reading about the daily protests on social networks. The agreement to change the name of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia to Northern Macedonia was signed by the two prime ministers at a ceremony on the Greek shore of Lake Prespa over the weekend.
