Fierce storm hits Montenegro

Severe flooding was reported on Tuesday in several towns across Montenegro following two days of stormy weather with heavy rainfall with warnings issued for drivers to avoid certain roads and the local population to remain indoors.

Montenegrin media said that the coastal resort town of Budva was left without power with its streets flooded. The local rescue services chief Dragan Bozovic said that every part of the town was threatened by flooding.

The road from Budva to >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << Tivat has been cut off by the flooding and warnings have been issued for drivers on the roads to Kotor and Herceg Novi.

The situation in the town of Herceg Novi in Boka Kotorska Bay is similar with the local authorities reporting 150 litres of rain per square metre in less than 24 hours. Trees have been uprooted and some roads have been washed away in the flooding and the local authorities have called the population to remain indoors.

The Vijesti newspaper published pictures on its web site which showed mud from local streams flowing into the sea at Kumbor.

The heavy rain has caused problems in parts of the Montenegrin capital Podgorica where traffic collapsed due to flooding in the afternoon and evening.

The Montenegrin national TV (RTCG) reported problems on roads in the north of the country because of landslides and rockfalls with the national auto club issuing warnings for several roads.
