FCO official: Progress in Western Balkans

British FCO official told N1 Zagreb srtudio Western Balkans could move forward regarding some results, but cautioned that there still were problems, particularly with rule of law and corruption

The Western Balkans has showed some notable progress, but the rule of law, fight against corruption and the level of democracy should be higher, Fiona Mcllwham, head of the British Foreign Office Western Balkans Department said on Wednesday (March 28).

“Western Balkans countries >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << are in the second phase, there is peace, stability, prosperity and growth. High, envious growth rates. Two countries are NATO members and other two states are negotiating with the European Union,” Mcllwham told N1 Zagreb studio, adding that all of that was noted in the last EU Strategy for the region.

Speaking about the relations between Serbia and Kosovo, she said it was important for the wider region, but also for both countries. She added it was essential for Pristina and Belgrade to keep talking as well because of their European paths. But, she stressed, “we in London believe that the dialogue should be supported too”.

Mcllwham said there were a number of reasons for optimism regarding Belgrade and Pristina. “This region can move forward, can be democratic, prosperous… Regional cooperation, dialogue among countries is crucial. Some weak points – frail institutions, corruption certainly exist...”

She added that “our commitment to Western Balkans is a long-term one, a historic one.” “We were involved in peace process in the ‘90s. That’s why it is far-reaching to continue our support of the region and send a clear message that by organising the summit in London we really want this region to move forward,” Mcllwham said.

Referring to poisoning of former Russian spy and his daughter in Britain, Mcllwham described it as a pattern of Russian aggression.

“What happened in Solesburry was a bold and nervy step, terrible attack on British soil, against all international conventions. That is one of the Russian aggression patterns. It is the attack against the United Kingdom, Europe and all the values we share. I think that the other countries have recognised that as well. The reactions from our allies in the EU were remarkable. It was not a simple solidarity, it was a common need to send Russia a message,” she said.
