Domestic violence kills more women than in earlier years

A total of 18 women have been killed in domestic violence incidents in Serbia this year which is more than in any of the past 10 years, Belgrade newspaper Politika said on Wednesday.

Vanja Macanovic, a lawyer with the Autonomous Women’s Center, warned that high risk situations are not being recognised. “Every third woman who was killed in 2017 died after reporting domestic violence incidents to the police,” she said.

Macanovic feels that the introduction of the >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << law to prevent domestic violence last year is a good thing because it imposes a zero tolerance policy for violence but added that a large number of people in social and other services are still failing to recognize high risk situations.

Politika said that the courts issued 10,000 restraining orders to protect victims of violence but that most of the sentences handed down for domestic violence were suspended.

“Repressive laws have no effect on lowering crime rates and can’t solve psychological and family problems. We have to prevent fatal outcomes,” Vesna Nikolic Ristanovic, head of the Victims’ Society, told the newspaper, adding that perpetrators of domestic violence are rarely sent to jail “which is the measure that best protects victims”.
