Croatian Serb MP denies anti-referendum accusations
Serb minority MP Milorad Pupovac on Tuesday denied accusations by an organization calling for a referndum on Croatia's election law that the ruling coalition and the opposition exerted pressure to get him to oppose the petition.
Pupovac dismissed claims of “manipulation by the political elite” to prevent the referendum.
The organization wants to limit the rights of minority MPs ro prevent them from voting on the state budget and mebers of the government. "I don't see a campaign by the government, the ruling coalition or other political parties in parliament," Pupovac told reporters following a meeting of minority representatives with Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic on the implementation of minority programmes.
Pupovac said that there was no campaign or comments on the referendum by any political party or member of the government.
He said Croaitan President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic "got involved before things matured and was more involved than she said she would be."
The president said that by signing the referendum petition, people have shown they want changes to election legislation, and that their will should be respected.
