China restricts access to Strong-Willed Pig
Ten years after it survived 36 days under the debris following the devastating earthquake in Pengzhou city, Sichuan province, Zhu Jianqiang, or “Strong-Willed Pig,” can only be visited under the strict eye of local communication officials and the police.
A 7.9-magnitude quake rocked the province in 2008, killing 87,000 people, but the one-year-old pig survived on water and a bag of charcoal that had been buried alongside it in the ruins.
The 150 kilograms pig had >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << lost two-thirds of its weight by the time he was found.
Nicknamed Zhu Jianqiang, he is hailed in China as a national hero and a symbol of the will to stay alive.
The pig is kept in a warm and cosy suite at the local Jianchuan Museum, and he draws many visitors every day. With a group of staff including health physicians specially assigned to take care of him, he is quite healthy and now weighs 200 kilograms.
But as the anniversary of the May 12 earthquake approaches, foreign journalists who want to visit the pig have to submit an official request, since the pig seems to have become a sensitive political issue.
China does not allow any disturbances of its national heroes, and the Zhy Jianguand is not an exception.
The AFP crew said it had to follow the procedure in order to visit the hero. Visiting journalists are escorted by the local communication officials and police officers.
