Bosnia elects new leaders

Preliminary results of the general elections in Bosnia and Herzegovina showed changes among the Serb and Croat top leaders, while the Bosniaks had to choose a new man since their senior politician Bakir Izetbegovic did not run, N1 reported on Monday.

Instead, the Bosniaks voted in Sefik Dzaferovic, also from Izetbegovic’s Party for Democratic Action (SDA).

Milorad Dodik, so far the president of the Republika Srpska (RS), the Serb-dominated Bosnia’s entity, and the >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << leader of the Alliance of Independent Social Democrats (SNSD), won the vote for the Serb member to Bosnia's tripartite presidency, ending ahead of the so far representative Mladen Ivanic.

The Croats also placed their trust in a new man, Zeljko Komsic, from the Democratic Front (DF) who won over the previous member Dragan Covic of the Croatian Democratic Union in Bosnia and Herzegovina (HDZ in BiH.)

The elections were also held for the president and vice-president of the RS, its assembly, for the parliaments in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Bosniaks’ and Croats’ entity, and for ten cantons in the Federation.

Over 3.300,000 people had the right to vote in Bosnia. The turnout was 53.36 percent. A total of 128 political parties and organisations took part in the election race with 7,500 candidates.
