Belgraders recall protests from half a century ago
The participants of the students’ protests held across Europe in 1968, including the then Communist Yugoslav capital of Belgrade, recollected the event at the Faculty of Political Science ahead of the 50th anniversary of the movement.
The Belgrade protest started on June 2 and lasted eight days with the whole University on strike.
It started seemingly for a banal reason – students could not get into a hall for a manifestation because it wasn’t enough room.

Police were tough on demonstrators and the beatings happened on a daily basis. Many of protesters ere later expelled from the University.
The end came after the then Yugoslav Presdident Josip Broz Tito’s speech in which he said that the students were right, adding the authorities made some mistakes.
