Belgrade mayor announces flood protection project
Belgrade Mayor Zoran Radojicic said 50 centimetres high and five-kilometre long wall in the Zemun neighbourhood will be the solution for the flood protection in that area.
Speaking for Belgrade-based daily newspaper Politika, Radojicic said that mobile barriers would be installed along the Danube riverbank, from the Branko’s Bridge in New Belgrade to ‘Radecki’ club in Zemun.
“The goal is to swiftly set the equipment up on the banks when the water level goes up >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << and in case of the flood threats, and when not needed it would be put in storage,” explained the mayor.
A contract for the equipment procurement worth some EUR 1.7 million was reached with a German company and the funds were secured in the European Union’s Instruments for Pre-Accession Assistance (IPA) funds.
According to Radojicic, the costs of the construction of the protection wall is estimated at EUR 2 million but this amount does not include the construction of access roads and paths.
Serbia, Croatia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina were hit by severe floods in May 2014, inflicting serious damage. One-third of Serbia’s territory was affected by the floods, leaving 57 dead. Over 32,000 citizens were evacuated from their homes due to the flood threat.
Many homes were completely destroyed in the 2014 floods and thousands were severely damaged.
