Belgrade assembly writes off debt for private company
The Belgrade city assembly decided on Wednesday to write off a huge debt owed to the city by the Galenika pharmaceuticals company.
The city assembly voted to write off 640,000 Euros in debt, drawing heated reactions from opposition councillors who said the decision inflicts damage on the city budget.
Oppostion Alliance for Serbia councillors said the Serbian government should cover the loss from its privatization income, recalling that the debts of privately-owned companies >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << were never written off before. Alliance for Serbia group chief Nikola Jovanovic said “the residents of Belgrade need the money more than the Brazilian billionaire whose company bought Galenika”.
Deputy Mayor Goran Vesic told the assembly that the city authorities were only implementing a government decision, just as they had done before and recalled that the city assembly a debt of millions of Euros owed to the city by the PKB food production company (which was owned by the city at the time).
Vesic and other Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) councillors accused the former city authorities under then Mayor Dragan Djilas who now heads the Alliance for Serbia of writing off debts to private companies.
The Luxembourg-based Aelius company bought a 93.7 percent stake in Galenika for 16 million Euros in 2017.
