Athens, Skoplje agree on name, Macedonian TV claims
Official Skoplje and Athens have “most probably” agreed on the name Republic of Northern Macedonia for that former Yugoslav republic, the Macedonian TV station Telma reported on Tuesday, quoting unnamed diplomatic sources.
The station said that the two countries’ Foreign Ministers Nikola Dimitrov and Nikos Kotsias also agreed during their talks in Brussels on a plan to finally resolve the dispute over the name of the former Yugoslav republic. That 11 point plan is expected >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << to be verified by Prime Ministers Zoran Zaev and Alexis Tsipras in a telephone conversation on Wednesday.
Telma TV quoted unofficial sources who said Macedonia (FYROM) would be given a date to start pre-accession negotiations with the European Union in June but warned that if Skoplje and Athens fail to agree on a name before the EU summit, they will be given a deadline of next December to resolve their dispute.
Speaking to reporters in Berlin, Greek Foreign Minister Kotzias said that the agreement was in Greece’s national interest. “The agreement with FYROM was reached not because that country wants to join the European Union and NATO – which is something that we support – but because [reaching a deal] is in our own national interest,” Kotzias is quoted as saying by Athens daily Ekathimerini which added that he did not provide more details about the agreement.
