Anti-semitic graffiti following Israeli president’s visit
Anti-semitic graffiti appeared in central Belgrade’s Jevrejska (Jewish) street on Friday, drawing condemnation from local Jewish organizations and a swift reaction from the city authorities.
The Alliance of Jewish Communities of Serbia and the Jewish Community of Belgrade issued a statement “sharply condemning the vandalism and anti-semitism expressed in graffiti in the centre of the city which was immediatelly removed thanks to the Belgrade authorities”.
The Jevrejska >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << ulica (Jewish street) sign was crossed out with black paint and the word Srpska (Serbian) written underneath it along with the sentence “kill, slaughter so Jews don’t exist” in Serbian further on. City communal services staff removed the graffiti.
“We view this anti-semitic attack on Jews in the light of the attempt to rehabilitate Serbian (World War 2) quisling Milan Nedic who collaborated with the (Nazi) occupation authorities. The incident in Belgrade was also an attempt to overshadow the visit by Israeli President Reuven Rivlin and attempt to disrupt the strong ties between the Serbian and Israeli people and their excellent international cooperation,” the Jewish Communities said in the statement.
