Analyst: Populists convert fake news into real & vice versa

Fake news is nothing new, but what’s new is that there are many more of them now and that they find a host in politicians, Bosko Jaksic, a political analyst has told the FoNet news agency on Wednesday.

The new populists are using the fake news in a poisonous way in a show-down with political opponents and to turn a lie into a truth and vice versa, Jaksic has said, quoting Sir Winston Churchill’s famous words: "A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << to get its pants on."

The analyst added that the leading creators of the fake news were politicians, but “the obedient media, presenting themselves as hard-working, professional and reliable, publish them.”

On the other hand, Jaksic has said, the media which are doing their job by criticising, investigating and searching for truth, are branded liars and those who spread fake news.

At first glance, those who produce the fake news are like those with ‘Gucci’ or ‘Patek Phillipe’ counterfeit, he has said, adding the false news are much more dangerous than forged handbags or wrist watches.

They are cancerous, and that’s why their influence over society is dramatic, Jaksic has said, adding that it is difficult to fight against them since everyone can fall victim to the fake news.

He said that the only way to return the credibility to the media would be to encourage the truthful news and to boost media in searching for truth.

However, Jaksic said, it was apparent that the world’s leaders were not ready for that, starting with (US President) Donald Trump and a series of others with an authoritarian tendency and hostile toward media freedom.
