13 DRAGON BABIES HATCHED: Wonder in Slovenia!

Two weeks after the first dragon-baby hatched in the aquarium of Postojnksa pit, as Slovenians affectionately call Olms or Proteus (commonly known as human fish), the first recorded birth of this mysterious amphibian in artificial conditions is being carried  on successfully, so in the pool there are now 13 larvae, and it is expected for the remaining 13 to develop, published on Wednesday by Slovenian biologists who are monitoring the situation with great care.

If everything goes to plan, >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu Telegraf.rs << first Proteus larva that came into this world will start feeding on its own and wont be dependent on the yolk.

For that and other larvae that develop, there is already specially adapted food, stated the experts.

The biologists are mostly worried with the bad condition of water in Postojnska pit which is filled by the river Pivka which plunges into the pit and provides water for the living world there.

Every chemical pollution, such as appearance of chlorine and phosphate in the underground waters can be too sensitive and dangerous for the delicate underground species such as human fish.

Experts say that from 64 eggs that were laid at the start of the month by an isolated female, more than 20 survived, and by the looks of things, larva could develop, which would be true miracle - said the experts.

In natural environment, from 500 laid eggs, into the new man fish only 2 eggs develop, some theories say. Also, mysterious blind little white animal mates only once every ten years.

But, little is known about the reproduction process and laying the eggs because it was never recorded in natural conditions nor it could be recreated, which is, thanks to technology, now possible, conclude biologists.
